During that call, Obama reportedly cautioned Mamdani that critics would be “waiting to pounce” if his progressive agenda faltered. He emphasized that the world would be watching to see if a democratic socialist could effectively manage New York’s massive bureaucracy.

The Trump Factor
The meeting comes at a moment of escalating tension between City Hall and the White House. While Mamdani has held two collegial meetings with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office over the last several months, the relationship has soured recently.
Earlier this week, President Trump took to social media to blast Mamdani’s proposed “pied-à -terre tax,” which targets second homes valued over $5 million. Trump claimed the policy is “DESTROYING New York” and threatened to pull federal funding. Inside the Bronx childcare center, the focus remained on the children. The duo read the book Alone and Together and led a spirited sing-along. Obama, who notably did not endorse Mamdani during the primary, appears to be stepping in to help the young mayor transition from a “star power” campaigner to an effective executive.
